An undergraduate may be glad to pay part of the cost of a professor’s teaching. The final 20% is for service, including off campus professional activities. University faculty members typically assign only 40% of their time to teaching (undergraduate and graduate) with the same amount allocated to research. ![]() Universities are multifaceted institutions, with extensive graduate studies programs, expensive research facilities, commercialization offices, continuing education, and other facilities. But the cost of providing an undergraduate degree is only part of the total cost of running a university, and what students in Quebec are paying is not 17% of the cost of their Bachelor’s degrees, but 17% of the cost of running the entire university, many functions of which have little or nothing to do with them.
